Google AdWords has been running for over 10 years however there are still a lot of people, including online marketers, and website owners who don’t understand what is is or how it works. Below is a simple overview of what Google AdWords is exactly and how big it is in the world of online advertising.

The History

Most people know the history of Google, starting off simply as a search engine. It would send its spiders out to crawl the internet and created a massive database of all websites and pages that it discovered. Using its own computer algorithms to put these sites in order of rank dependent upon search queries and keywords or phrases.

The site was then accessible to anybody on the internet to run a search and then list all the sites matched to this and click through to these pages. For business that didn’t end up top of these search results it didn’t make good reading which is where the whole Search Engine Optimisation development field came from.

Google then realised there was an opportunity to sell paid advertisements in search results and this is where Google AdWords had its inception.

Where are Adwords?

Whenever you search for almost anything in Google you will see them. Normally there will be 3 advertisements that come at the top of the search results a long with a long list down the right hand side. Perform a general search now and you will see it for yourself. You will notice that these AdWords take up almost the whole of the search results on the front page which shows you how important they are.

How do I Do It?

To get your own ads placed in these sections you need to sign up to Google AdWords and create advertisements with keywords that you would like your adverts to show up against.

In its most basic terms, you need to select a maximum amount you are willing to pay for every click on your advert, which is called the Cost Per Click (CPC). Depending on how much you pay per bid will determine where you show up in the ad search results. It is also good to know that you only pay once someone clicks on your ad.
